Corrections and expressions of concern
Editorial notices do not all mean the same thing. An expression of concern communicates uncertainty about a work; a correction documents specific changes. Interpretation requires reading what is questioned or modified, rather than assigning a fixed severity from the name.
Source editorial review:
What an expression of concern communicates
ICMJE allows this notice while questions about integrity or conduct associated with an article are investigated. Its purpose is to make an unresolved situation visible so readers do not continue interpreting the source as though nothing happened.
The notice alone is neither a verdict of fraud nor a retraction. Record the stated problem and look for a later resolution. Uncertainty should not be treated as resolved merely because time has passed.
A correction needs identifiable content
ICMJE recommendations call for a correction to detail changes, refer to the original and accompany an updated version with dates. Earlier versions should be preserved, and citations should point to the latest version.
Scope varies. Correcting an affiliation does not change an experimental estimate; changing a table, calculation or figure requires reviewing claims that depended on it. The word correction does not establish in advance how much the interpretation changes.
A specific example: replaced figures
The notice concerning the Epitalon article in Biogerontology identifies incorrect versions of figures 1, 2 and 3 and provides replacements. It also states that the original article was corrected.
This permits a precise check: an earlier capture of any of those figures must be compared with the current version. The notice documents figure replacement; it does not, by itself, justify saying the whole study was retracted or that its results received independent confirmation.
How to review an existing citation
As an editorial practice, start with the exact element supporting the statement: a number, comparison, image or interpretation. Then compare it with the notice and corrected version.
If content used the Epitalon figures, the review must reach those figures and their captions. Merely updating the reference year does not resolve the discrepancy. If the notice does not explain a particular consequence, preserve that uncertainty instead of filling the gap by inference.
Three statuses worth keeping separate
A bibliography can distinguish corrected articles, articles with an unresolved expression of concern and retracted articles. This identifies what checking remains without collapsing different statuses into one label.
A correction may preserve the work with modifications; a concern may require follow-up; a retraction requires reconsidering the support attributed to it. In every case, the object examined is the specific article and its documentation, not a presumption about all its authors' work.
Questions and answers
Is a correction always a minor change?
No. Its importance depends on what was changed and how those elements support results or interpretations.
Is keeping the original PDF enough?
Not to establish current status. Check for later versions and linked notices.
