Ionic Strength in Experimental Comparisons
Saying both samples contain salt does not establish equivalent ionic environments. Ionic strength summarizes part of that environment but does not identify all its components. A rigorous comparison must preserve both the overall value and the identities of the ions present.

What ionic strength summarizes
IUPAC defines ionic strength through ion concentrations or molalities weighted by the square of their charges. The definition includes all considered ions, not only the salt highlighted in a description.
Stating a salt concentration without specifying its identity may therefore be insufficient. The basis used to express ionic strength and the species included in its calculation should also be clear.
One value does not identify the composition
A number summarizing several contributions cannot, by itself, recover what those contributions were. Matching ionic strength and preserving ionic identity are different conditions.
When reviewing a comparison, the composition table therefore remains necessary even if an overall value is reported. pH and buffering-system components should also be identified rather than treated as synonyms for ionic strength.
Ions did not have interchangeable effects in antibodies
In cell-free systems containing three IgG2 antibodies, an investigation compared agitation- and temperature-induced aggregation. The studied anions differed in their effects, and the two stress types produced different aggregation profiles.
This result prevents summarizing the experiment as salt stabilizes or salt destabilizes. The conclusion depends on the ion, protein and applied stress. It also does not establish a rule transferable to any peptide.
Aggregation can change pathway
In vitro studies with Aβ42 and variants changed the electrostatic environment to examine shifts in the dominant processes of aggregate multiplication. The aim was not merely to observe a faster or slower rate, but to distinguish pathways within a reaction network.
This system is a specific biophysical model. Its findings do not demonstrate clinical consequences of changing salts or automatically describe formulation stability for other entities.
Which question the comparison can answer
The report should specify whether it investigates the total amount of charged species, the identity of one ion or the complete medium composition. If several change together, the conclusion concerns that combined change.
An orderly reading separates composition, applied stress and analytical response. It then identifies which direct comparison supports the proposed explanation. This avoids attributing to ionic strength a difference that could also depend on component identity.
Questions and answers
Does equal ionic strength mean equivalent solutions?
No. It is an overall descriptor; two different compositions can share that value.
Is recording the added salt enough?
Not necessarily. The definition considers relevant ionic species in the system, including those supplied by other components.
